CALL FOR PROPOSALS
DOWNLOAD THE FULL GUIDELINES AND APPLICATION AT NAATF 09

Proposals are being accepted now through November 1, 2008 from companies and individual artists for the Second National Asian American Theater Festival, to be held in New York City in the fall of 2009.

Over approximately 10 days, the Festival will present up to 10 works by Asian American companies and individual artists, showcasing performance works that demonstrate and celebrate the vitally important contributions of Asian Americans to contemporary American culture. The Festival is a continuation of the momentum generated by the First National Asian American Theater Festival of June 2007, and National Asian American Theater Conferences in Los Angeles and Minneapolis, in 2006 and 2008, respectively.

For this Festival, we will be concentrating on presenting theater and performance art. While we acknowledge the equally important and rich dance and music works Asian American artists offer, it is beyond our capacity to include those disciplines at this time.

We seek to represent diversity in demographics, style, and subject matter, and will present work from both established and emerging companies and artists from various parts of the country. Artists and companies who have not previously been represented at conferences and festivals are especially encouraged to apply.

Proposed Programming:

* Fully produced works representing the diverse Asian American theatrical landscape.
* As appropriate, showcases of collected solo and ensemble performance pieces.
* Open mic events. Proposals to curate an event will be accepted.

Proposals must include the following:

• A fully completed application page, including a list of artists/personnel and production requirements, along with the project's development and/or production history.

• A one-page Artist's Statement and/or description of the proposed project.

• Artistic biography and/or resume of all key participants. For companies, please include a brief organizational biography and/or production history.

• Work samples.

As appropriate, scripts must be included. An excerpt or synopsis will be accepted, though full scripts are preferred. For proposals that do not include a tradional "script", please provide as detailed a description as possible, along with any other materials that may assist the panel in understanding the nature of the proposal.

Additional support materials are not required, but anything that may assist the panel in assessing the proposal is encouraged. For example, if the work has been produced before and you feel video or photographs may be helpful, send those. If the proposal incorporates important sound elements, send a CD. If it incorporates important choreographic elements, it might be a good idea to send photographs or video.

Any other materials that you feel may be of use to the panel in assessing your proposal, including but not limited to: press, reviews, photographs, and/or CD/DVD or other representations of the work. These materials are not limited to the proposed project – in other words, you are encouraged to send materials detailing previous work by key artists in order to demonstrate artistic excellence.

Selection Process:

Proposals will be adjudicated by a diverse seven-member panel. All proposals will be read by the entire panel and discussed in person through peer review.

Determinations on selected proposals will be made based on artistic merit, production feasibility, and representation of the Asian American theatrical landscape in terms of region, demographics, and style.
