INCIDENT AT HIDDEN TEMPLE world premiere *

By Damon Chua
Directed by Kaipo Schwab
Clurman Theatre at Theatre Row
Jan 21, 2017 - Feb 12, 2017

Building on the success of 2015’s FILM CHINOIS by Damon Chua, an atmospheric mystery in the genre of film noir, INCIDENT AT HIDDEN TEMPLE will focus on China in the 40’s with a narrative inspired by real events. Using the historic Flying Tigers squadron as the setting, and the key presence of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, the play throws open a window into the critical role played by American pilots in China during WWII. The mystery hinges upon three Chinese women – two sisters separated by wartime chaos, and the third who unwittingly crosses their paths.

From Damon Chua: “My take on the story sits squarely during a period of US-China engagement (1942 - 1944) that fewer and fewer people know about. Yet, it is a critical part of world history that has until now received little attention. For this story provides the context of how America lost its political leverage in China, ushering in the Communist era, which would last until the “ping pong diplomacy” of the 1970s. There is much to be learned from this period of history – the mistakes that were made, and the people who tried hard to right those mistakes. These lessons are ever relevant today, given our nation’s involvement in disputes and ideological warfare all over the globe.”

      ACQUITTAL
by Shahid Nadeem
Directed by Saheem Ali
Studio Theatre at Theatre Row
May / June 2017

ACQUITTAL focuses on four women in a Pakistan prison in the 80’s and how each represents a different injustice with illuminating revelations. The play was inspired by Shahid’s own imprisonment as young man. He is now the Artistic Director of Ashoka Theatre in Pakistan.

From Shahid NadeemACQUITTAL was written in 1987, while I was living in exile in London. It has a specific reference to the early 1980s, when General Zia-ul-Haq had implemented blatant discriminatory ‘Islamic’ laws (called Hudood Ordinances), which proved to be detrimental to the interests of women and minority groups. These laws were used to punish women and caused gross miscarriages of justice. Zia’s anti-women ‘Islamization’ policies galvanized the women’s movement in Pakistan.”

A DREAM OF RED PAVILIONS (world premiere) is one of the most beloved classics in Chinese literature and tells the tender love story of the Stone and the Flower.

Co-director Tisa Chang says - "Pan Asian is proud to present this World Premiere - a celebration of Chinese culture- in time for Lunar New Year in February 2016. While examining the privileged 1% of a fading aristocracy, A DREAM OF RED PAVILIONS continues Pan Asian's mission of exploring the contemporary relevance of timeless classics, and mirrors today's economic disparities seen on a global scale."
